The first boxes
The Commonwealth Vault Group opened its first safe deposit boxes in Auckland in 1998. The vault went into a heritage building that had been slated for demolition: a property developer bought it, restored it, and took a ninety-nine year lease on the site.
The model was simple, and it has not changed: a purpose-built vault, boxes rented plainly, and the people who hold them free to come and go.
Some of our earliest customers’ boxes are now in the care of the next generation, reflecting decades of trust.

Gold and silver, under the same roof
Gold and silver came about a decade after the first boxes, for a practical reason. Customers were buying metal elsewhere and then carrying it across town to place in their box.
Selling it in the same building removed the journey. Buy at the vault and what you buy can go into your box with you, without leaving the building.
Of the group’s bullion buyers in any given month, around two thirds have bought before. Holdings tend to be built a little at a time, over years.
2021 · Christchurch
A second vault
A second vault opened on Oxford Terrace, Christchurch, in August 2021, twenty-three years after the first. By the time Adelaide opened, the group was keeping boxes for thousands of customers and had been trusted with more than a billion dollars of their belongings.
2026 · Adelaide
The first vault outside New Zealand
Vault Australasia is that model at 22 King William Street, in the heart of the city — the group’s first vault outside New Zealand.
And why here? More than the economics. Adelaide is a sister city of Christchurch, where the group’s second vault has run since 2021 — two cities that share the things this business is built on: strong communities, long relationships, and wealth meant to be kept.
The Adelaide vault opens with twenty-eight years behind it: six box sizes, every price published before you visit, and gold and silver from the Perth Mint, PAMP and Monnaie de Paris under the same roof.
